San Giovanni D’Asso is a charming little village which lies in the heart of the Crete Senese, the unique and spectacular countryside to the south of Siena. Villa La Consuma is equally unique and provides the visitor with the perfect blend of classic Tuscan style, fabulous views and contact with Italian life and luxury.
Located in the heart of San Giovanni D'asso the façade of the house gives little impression of what lies behind.
The accommodation is spread over several levels and is all centred upon the lovely garden.
Entry is into a reception room from where stairs lead up to the first floor and down to one of the two doors to the garden.
The whole house has been restored with great style and sympathy. Whilst much of the furniture is antique, comfort has not been sacrificed.

Garden
The garden is amazingly private, considering the house is in the middle of the village.
The terrace overlooks the garden and pool and views beyond; from here steps lead down to the Italian garden, complete with lemon trees and pond.
The wonderful pool (12 x 6 m – 1.5 – 2.5m deep) is fully equipped with sun loungers and there is a separate bathroom next to it, cleverly placed in the original laundry room.
There is also a fridge here (so you don’t have too far to go for a cool drink). Pool towels are provided.
Our housetaker, Franco, is at your disposal for the barbecue in the garden and for the arrival day shopping.
Bordering on the garden of La Consuma, stands the smaller Villa La Capanna.
Staying at La Consuma is a real pleasure and we thoroughly recommend it for large families and groups of friends looking for a special location.
It is also possible to rent La Consuma together with La Capanna which is next door and can be linked by a garden gate.

Location
San Giovanni D'Asso is a small village with approximately 300 inhabitants. The villa is situated in the upper part of the village - the "Borghetto", directly opposite the ancient castle, the origins of which date back to the XIIth century, and which is now the seat of the municipal authorities.
The territory of San Giovanni includes the hamlets of Montisi, Lucignano d'Asso, Monterongriffoli, Vergelle and Pieve a Salti.
San Giovanni was originally the seat of rural Etruscan settlements, an area contested by both the Bishops of Arezzo and Siena, and it was sacked by the Ghibellines in 1315.
It assumed a more precise definition of its municipal boundaries with the General Regulation of the Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1777.
The castle hosts the famous White Truffle Market in the month of November.
The ancient romanesque church of San Giovanni Battista is near to the castle, while in the lower part of the village lies the most important church in the area, the beautiful San Pietro in Villore, built in the XIth and XIIth centuries, and which is now surrounded by many cypresses.
Within the municipal territory is the picturesque village of Montisi, with its Chiesa dell'Annunziata and its historical grain tower. Here, every year, on the Sunday nearest to the 5th of August (the Festival of the Madonna delle Nevi, the patron saint of Montisi) a jousting contest - the "Giostra di Simone" - takes place. Montelifre Castle is also important, while at Pava the XIIth century church is significant.
Among the agricultural products of the area, the white truffle is prized and famous throughout Italy, as are the excellent wines, oil, savoury cheeses and honey.
The lower part of San Giovanni d'Asso has a baker and butcher, a supermarket and cafe/bar.
There are public tennis courts 8 kms away at Torrenieri, the famous abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore is 7 kms away, the thermal spa town of San Quirico D'Orcia is 14 kms away, Montalcino 17 kms, and Pienza 20 kms.
The beautiful medieval city of Siena lies some 40 kilometres away, and Florence and San Gimignano are within a day's drive.
There is no public transport in San Giovanni, and it is essential therefore to have a car.
The nearest airports are approximately 2 and a half hours' equidistant drive away from Rome, Florence and Pisa.
